Wrangling for Watchdogs Workshop Berlin

March 15, 2013 in Events

School of Data works to empower civil society organizations, journalists and citizens with the skills they need to use data effectively in their efforts to create more equitable and effective societies.

We believe that data skills are key for anyone who wants to turn meaningless numbers into compelling evidence or a powerful story. Civil Society Organisations need an arsenal of skills and tools ready to pounce on and process the data they need as soon as it becomes available or a stack of ideas for how they can get hold of it if it is not.

The Workshop

This month, we will be organising a pilot workshop “Wrangling for Watchdogs” in Berlin to focus on building up this arsenal. We’ve picked a small number of Watchdog organisations from Eastern Europe and ones local to Berlin and are going to road-test the ‘learning through exploration’ methodologies we’ve been refining so far.

The Workshop will take place at Supermarkt on 26th and 27th March.

What we’ll cover

  • Getting better data: Including DIY data collection and getting better data from governments
  • Workflow: Speeding up, simplifying and automating boring and repetitive tasks so that people can get on with doing more important things. Wrangling skills and analysis. and
  • Creative communication with data: presentation and running data-driven-campaigns

The Explorative Approach

Over the past year, we’ve been refining our methodology for learning data skills through exploration.

We’ll be asking the pilot organisations to bring along some data that they currently need to work with and exploring it with them, learning along the way the data skills they need by putting them into action.
